When it’s right to use Oracle?
This decision depends on many factors, mostly on which technology platform you’re already using and any particular budget constraints. We work closely with our customers to help advise them on the best database solution for their internal skill set, as well as any stability and security considerations.
Oracle Databases have enormous data warehousing capabilities and when you require high performance in demanding environments, it’s ideal. This particularly includes environments that support high volume web applications that are required to be online 24/7. It’s an open system, which means it supports any operating system and hardware platform, giving you maximum flexibility.
Oracle has a suite of extremely useful added features, which organisations aren’t often aware of. This includes the Flashback Technology, which helps with efficient recovery from human errors and system failure. This feature is especially useful during testing, and comes free with the Oracle Enterprise Edition, so you may already have this capability. You do need to ensure you have sufficient database space when using a tool like this, however this can easily be controlled by restricting how far along the timeline you want to be able to roll back.
Oracle Database Security is another key feature that many organisations don’t tend to use, but works extremely well and is incredibly robust. It is complex to set up and deploy, and does use increased database space, but is very secure and effective. We always recommend working with an ODS expert when utilising this feature, due to it’s complexity and potential impact on database size.
Overall, if your primary concerns are; security, protection, maintenance, stability and high performance, then you should consider Oracle as your database platform.
Recently, we helped a leading media outlet organisation to migrate and upgrade from Oracle 10g Database (RAC) to Oracle 12c Database (RAC). Being on the latest version/release of the Oracle database was a necessity to the business needs. NCS recommended the use of Oracle GoldenGate to be implemented, which would help facilitate a seamless migration between the Oracle databases – this ensured a failsafe mechanism as well as enabling us to skip the two-stage migration process.
One of the key notable features of Oracle Goldengate using the bi-directional method, allows the ability to switch between database versions at the flip of a switch without interruptions to the business – this can also be used as a failsafe mechanism. The other key notable feature, which was beneficial to the customer was the ability to migrate/upgrade with almost zero downtime.
The customer was extremely pleased with the adoption of Oracle GoldenGate – the migration and upgrade was achieved in a seamless manner with great speed and agility, without interruption to business continuity.
